You Give Me Something

As I said 2 blog entries earlier, another favorite song of mine is "You Give Me Something" by James Morrison. And I *did* say that this song warrants a separate blog entry...so here it is. :)

I've written a lot about lyrics and quotes in this blog of mine, and I keep reiterating that we (us regular folk) are drawn to others' words because - like what I said in my previous blog entry, "Eat. Pray. Love...Read a Book." - "They're the things you know are true, but you can't quite find the right words to express them." (See related blog entry "Quotes")

A lot has been going on lately, and I don't have the time (or the resolve?) to say what I feel out loud and so I usually live vicariously through songs.

This particular song called out to me, not in the usual way (not through the radio / iPod), but through a Facebook status of a friend. One line jumped out at me (guess which line?), so I searched for the full lyrics and the mp3 (I had it in my iPod all along), and I was blown away.

This song (and its message) is along the lines of "Half of My Heart" (in terms of significance and impact. Haha), and it is now #6 in my Top 25 Most Played (it's got a lot of catching up to do with my top 2, "Edge of Desire" by John Mayer and "Secrets" by One Republic. Haha).

The video for the song (as shown below) is a bit cryptic; what is the significance of the can-can girls and the jumprope girls? Are they there to impress the girl, or to impress James Morrison?

Hmmm. Maybe it is meant to highlight the aloofness of the girl; her being "nonchalant" and dedma; her inability to be impressed. :) James Morrison does not know what trick / style to execute in order to impress her; he can't read her; he doesn't know where he stands with her, thus the plea "please give me something..."

Ooh, I think I figured it out. :)

I love this song. :) James Morrison, are you sure you don't reside in my mind / heart? You seem to know all of my lines. :))

You Give Me Something
by James Morrison

You only stay with me in the morning
You only hold me when I sleep
I was meant to tread the water
But now I've gotten in too deep

For every piece of me that wants you
Another piece backs away

'Cause You give me something
That makes me scared alright
This could be nothing
But I'm willing to give it a try
Please give me something
Because someday I might know my heart

You only waited up for hours
Just to spend a little time alone with me
And I can say I've never bought you flowers
I can't work out what they mean

I never thought that I'd love someone
That was someone else's dream

You give me something
That makes me scared alright
This could be nothing
But I'm willing to give it a try
Please give me something

Because someday I might call you from my heart

But it might be a second too late
And the words that I could never say
Are gonna come out anyway

You give me something
That makes me scared alright
This could be nothing
But I'm willing to give it a try
Please give me something

You give me something
That makes me scared alright
This could be nothing
But I'm willing to give it a try
Please give me something
Because someday I might know my heart

Know my heart, know my heart, know my heart
